Thanks for your interest in participating in the Spring TimeDollar Fair by sharing your skills with our community! To do so, you just need to follow these three simple steps:

Deadline for entering a Service or Item into the Fair is Thursday May 17, 2012!

1) Decide what Offer you’d like to enter

Please note that your service or item should fit within the Offer Categories we are showcasing: Yard and Garden, Home Improvement, Lessons & Education, Miscellaneous Services, New & Used Goods for Sale.

2) Login to your SkillShare account and create a NEW Offer Ad following these instructions:

a) Click on the “My Account” tab and scroll down to your “Current Offers” box.
b) Click on “Post a New Offer of a Service” right below the words “Current Offers”
c) IMPORTANT! For the Category, select the Category that is most appropriate for your service. For example, a weeding Offer would go under the category Home; subcategory Garden & Yard work
d) Start the title of your Ad with “Spring TimeDollar Fair Offering – ” so, an example title would be, “Spring TimeDollar Fair Offering – help weeding your garden”
e) List all important details in the “In Detail” box including any limitations (for example, I will only provide this service to the first two members who sign up at the Fair) and the TimeDollar price and any reimbursement for materials requested (for example, this service/item costs 4 TimeDollars plus reimbursement for food ingredients).

For an example of what your Ad should look like, login to check out Laura McCall’s Offer called “Spring TimeDollar Fair Offering – Used Items for Sale for TimeDollars.”

3) Show up at the day of the Fair!

What to expect:
a) Please attend the “Giver” meeting during the set up time (2:30-3:00pm) where we will go over the information below in person.

b) If you have a Service Offering entered:
i. You will have a designated seat and name placard at the table for your Service Category (Yard and Garden, Home Improvement, Lessons & Education, Miscellaneous Services)
iii. Please bring photos or examples of your work, if possible, to help in your discussions with members.
iv. Members will approach you to discuss setting up a transaction to receive your service.
v. If you and another member agree to make a transaction, you will fill out a Service Offer Intent Form with the details and each take a copy. Copies of this form will be provided for you the day of the Fair.
vi. During the rest of the event, you are welcome to circulate and purchase services/goods yourself!

b) If you have New or Used Item(s) entered:
i. After the “Giver” meeting at 2:30 pm, take your item(s) to the Fair Sale table and fill out a Sale Item Form with details about the item(s).
ii. Feel free to circulate throughout the Fair and set up services or purchase items yourself.

How to Get Involved

1) Enter Your Offer into the Fair

Do you have a skill in the above featured categories that you’d like to share? Please check out the Giver Guidelines to find out how to participate and earn TimeDollars this spring.

2) Attend the Fair and Spend Your TimeDollars!

If you’d like to attend the Fair to purchase services and goods, here’s what you should expect:

Fun, friends, music, and a light finger food potluck! All members should bring a potluck appetizer-type dish. No soups, casseroles, or anything that can’t be easily picked up and eaten with hands.

Bring some cash in small bills. Members can request reimbursement for materials in addition to TimeDollars for things that you buy. For example, a hand-thrown clay pot may cost 4 TimeDollars plus $2 US dollars for materials reimbursement.

If you purchase items at the Fair, you will be asked to check out before you leave so transactions made at the fair can be recorded and US dollars (cash) collected, when applicable. We will have a laptop set up to record the TimeDollar transaction and we’ll also have a cash box.

If you discuss a service offering with a Giver and agree to make a transaction, you will leave with a sheet of paper with the details of the trade you agreed upon (exact service, expected date of service, estimated TimeDollar cost, contact information, etc.). Then, it will be up to you and the Giver to follow up with each other to make the trade happen and record TimeDollars exchanged.

3) Volunteer to Help Run the Fair

If you’d like to help us plan, prepare or run the Fair on the day of, please check out the Fair Volunteer Requests.

Questions? Feel free to contact your Neighborhood Coordinator or the Spring TimeDollar Fair Coordinator, Laura McCall, at membership@skillsharenetwork.org

“I really hate to ask for help.
I grew up in a family where I needed to take care of myself, no matter what came up. As a therapist, I learned the benefit of being both the helper and the one seeking assistance. It is still very hard for me to ask for help, but my ability to transcend my own personal “block” became invaluable back in December when I needed help entertaining my puppy.
In 20110, the retina in my right eye had spontaneously “torn”, just one step away from a detachment and bringing with it the possibility of blindness. It was scary, but I was able to have laser surgery quickly. Then I had six weeks during which I could only walk slowly, and I could not bend over or lift anything weighing more than 20 pounds.
Then, last November, I was out walking my new, energetic puppy, and started seeing flashing lights in my left eye. A visit to the eye doctor revealed that the retina had not torn, but was in danger of doing so. Once again my activities were restricted, this time for four weeks. No lifting, bending, or moving. My husband was going out of town for a week, and… this puppy! How could I keep him entertained, and keep me from going crazy?
I contacted several people from SkillShare, some of who had advertised pet sitting and walking, and some who I knew from previous exchanges. If I could just get one person a day to come over and play with my pup for a little while, it would help.
Mary Headley, Corin Blanchard, Rachel Rubenstein, Elise Berlin, and Lisa Molbury all responded to my request. They each came over and played, and in a couple of cases, walked, with the puppy. It was nice to get to know them, and exercise the puppy at the same time.
Laura Denman McCall, with whom I had done a nature walk a couple of years ago, came over and played. She also shared some great training tips with me.
SarahKate Butterworth, to whom I had taught some Spanish a while ago, and who had taken some great pictures of me a couple of years ago, brought her delightful girls over, and we had fun playing with and training my puppy.
I am very appreciative of all those who responded, even those who contacted me only to tell me they could not help. Just knowing there are caring folks out there helps to ease life’s burdens when stress and feelings of isolation set in. Thank you so much, everyone who responded to my posts, especially those who came over to lend a hand.”

During your orientation meeting, we will give you a broad overview of how SkillShare and time banking works. We will also show you how to get signed up and logged on for using the SkillShare exchange software as well as how to build your profile and add your first Offers and Requests.

Prior to our meeting, please complete the following tasks:

If you are comfortable with computers and feel able to, please click here to start to create your online profile. Just follow the instructions. If you would rather not do this step on your own, not a problem. We’ll go over how to do it during the meeting.

Fill out the first two pages of the Member Enrollment Form. Please also review the other pages of the form and sign them. If you have any questions, please jot them down and we’ll go over them when we meet.

Please think about what skills you have that you’d like to offer the SkillShare community and of what skills you’d like to request. On our website under the tab Current Services is a listing of Offers and Requests that will help get you thinking about this. Please jot down several offers and requests on this sheet as you will be entering these in live during our meeting so you get some practice using the website.

Come to the meeting prepared to make your annual contribution to the organization. The important work SkillShare does in strengthening our community is funded entirely by member contributions. We ask that all new members make a $30 annual contribution. If this will be a financial burden to you, we can discuss a lesser amount during our meeting.

Come to the meeting prepared to have your photo taken for the website. If you dislike the photo taken, you can upload your own preferred photo at a later time.

We look forward to meeting you!
